Alternate Universe, Tortured Hero

As a Seminus demon, Raze’s life literally depends on having sex with females. The problem is that he doesn’t desire females, and it’s physically impossible for him to be with males. Thankfully, he and his best friend, Fayle, have an arrangement that keeps him alive . . . if lonely. He finds some solace in his work as a medic at Thirst, a vampire club known for its rough clientele. But his carefully structured world turns upside down when he meets a mysterious male who makes him want what he can never have.

Slake is an assassin used to getting what he wants, and what he wants is Raze. But he also wants to earn back the soul he sold when he was a much different demon. All he has to do is capture a runaway succubus named Fayle and hand her over to her family. What he doesn’t count on is being caught himself by a web of lies—and his attraction to Raze.

Raze and Slake must navigate a dangerous world to be together. But as Fayle’s jealousy of their relationship turns deadly, they find themselves embroiled in a battle not only for their love, but their lives and souls.

"According to the news, the weather system bearing down on Damon Slake was a proven killer."

I received a free copy of this book from Ritpide Publishing via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I have been intrigued by this novella ever since it was announced.  It is made clear throughout the Demonica/Lords of Deliverance series that Seminus demons are a rare subspecies of incubi that need sex with females to survive.  This biological aspect is what made me so anxious to read about Raze, a gay Seminus demon.  And, in classic Larissa Ione fashion, she provides an exciting, creative story with fascinating characters and a super-steamy romance.

Raze is one of the loneliest characters in this universe due to the fact that he is not attracted to females, but must have sex with them in order to survive.  He manages to remain fulfilled with his work as a medic for a vampire club and the infamous Underworld General Hospital (UGH).  He also relies on a succubus friend to keep his sanity with Fayle being the reason that he ends up meeting assassin, Damon Slake.  Slake is charged with bringing Fayle in, but his mission is thrown off when he meets, and becomes attracted to, Raze.

Both heroes are well-written and nuanced.  Ione specializes in bad boys with hearts of gold that are often hidden under deep dark secrets.  And that is no exception in this book especially with Slake.  Raze, for all his issues, is a nice guy with a normal (for this series) upbringing while Slake's past is mysterious and one of the most intriguing aspects of the story.  The romance is surprisingly sweet though it is definitely not missing the heat that this author is known for.  I wasn't sure if there would be able to be a logical way for Raze and Slake to have a happy ending, but it worked out pretty well.

This is a novella that is designed to be read by fans and newbies.  There is a detailed glossary at the beginning that helps get new readers acclimated to terms such as "Harrowgate" and there are plenty of explanations of important characters without being overwhelming, I think.  As a long-time fan of Demonica and Lords of Deliverance, I loved returning to UGH and seeing how some of my favorites like Eidolon, Wraith, and even Revenant are doing.  I definitely recommend this book for anyone who loves sexy, forbidden romance or wants to see what all the fuss is about with this fascinating world.

  1. I hear such great things about Larissa Ione. I just don't think her books are for me. But I'm glad you really enjoyed this, especially since you were a bit apprehensive, too.
