REVIEW: "Spirit Bound" by Richelle Mead

Spirit Bound by Richelle Mead
(Vampire Academy #5)

Young Adult--Paranormal--Vampires
Penguin/Razorbill--May 2010
Hardback, 489 pages

After a long and heartbreaking journey to Dimitri’s birthplace in Siberia, Rose Hathaway has finally returned to St. Vladimir’s—and to her best friend, Lissa Dragomir. It's graduation, and the girls can’t wait for their real lives outside of the Academy’s cold iron gates to finally begin.

But even with the intrigue and excitement of court life looming, Rose’s heart still aches for Dimitri. He's out there, somewhere. She failed to kill him when she had the chance, and now her worst fears are about to come true. Dimitri has tasted her blood, and she knows in her heart that he is hunting her. And if Rose won't join him, he won't rest until he's silenced her...forever.

But Rose can't forget what she learned on her journey—whispers of a magic too impossible and terrifying to comprehend. A magic inextricably tied to Lissa that could hold the answer to all of Rose's prayers, but not without devastating consequences. Now Rose will have to decide what—and who—matters most to her. In the end, is true love really worth the price?

The last time readers saw Rose Hathaway she had been on a mission to kill Dimitri, her mentor and lover, from an immortal life as a Strigoi.  Unfortunately, she was unable to complete that mission and has returned to St. Vladimir's Academy to figure out a different way to save him.  Now, she and her friends must deal with their changing positions in Moroi society.

Rose's unsuccessful journey to Russia has left her a more mature, but thankfully still impulsive person.  She has a goal in mind and is determined to do whatever she can to achieve it.  Her graduation and then move to the royal court forces her to begin taking steps towards her true purpose in life.  I really enjoy watching her character growth and found her reactions to the events of Blood Promise to be realistic and courageous.

I also enjoyed watching the renewed friendship between Lissa and Rose.  I was not a fan of Lissa's initial reaction to Rose's adventure, but liked how she understood why Rose did what she did and even felt guilt over not being a good friend at the time.  Their friendship needed to be tested and I think they passed the test with flying colors.  I also liked seeing Adrian again and how his relationship with Rose continues to grow despite her obvious hesitancy.  And, of course, Dimitri continues to hang around in the background and become more menacing as he taunts Rose and her friends.

In terms of the overarching storyline, readers continue to see the ever-changing political landscape of Moroi society.  Rose's journey to court allows her and Lissa to see both the good and bad sides of the government which throws some definite drama into the mix.  Also, the gang continues their discovery of what the spirit element can do.  I love how the author reveals the inner workings of this ability without skimming on the negative side effects.

The climatic ending was a complete shock to me and I found myself putting down Spirit Bound and immediately picking up Last Sacrifice.  I am anxious to see how Rose deals with the difficult situations she found herself in throughout this book.  Wonderful addition to a wonderful series!!
